Have you been thinking about visiting Black Virgin Mountain?
We enjoyed a one-day excursion from Ho Chi Minh City to this sacred summit which towers into the clouds above the otherwise flat Mekong Delta.
Now, we’re here to share everything we learned on that journey, so you too can pilgrimage to the peak locally known as Núi Bà Đen (Mountain of the Black Lady).
What Is Black Virgin Mountain?
At 986 meters (3,235 feet), Black Virgin Mountain is the tallest mountain in the southern region of Vietnam.
One of our favorite day trips from Saigon – HCMC, Black Virgin Mountain is located in Tay Ninh Province, approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the Cambodian border, 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) northeast of Tay Ninh City and 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Ho Chi Minh City.
A unique geological feature resembling an overturned rice bowl floating atop an ocean of agricultural fields, Black Virgin Mountain has earned mythical status in local lore with tales of its mystical nature dating back to the Khmer Empire, an expansive kingdom that once controlled this territory.
As the legend goes, a young woman who was respected in the community, ascended the mountain to pray at the temple. However, on her way up, she was surrounded and accosted by a group of local thugs. Miraculously, an orphan boy, raised by the temple’s monks, stepped in to save the young woman.
Following this dramatic encounter, the young woman and the orphan boy fell in love and planned to marry. Tragically, their romance was cut short when the orphan boy was conscripted into the emperor’s army and sent away to fight the kingdom’s enemies.
Soon after, when the young woman was hiking to the mountain’s temple to pray, she was again set upon by the same group of thugs. Yet, this time the orphan boy was not there to save her. So, rather than surrendering to the unscrupulous thugs, the young woman flung herself off of the mountain and died.
Then a monk who lived in the pagoda complex on Ba Den Mountain had a series of dreams, in which a “dark-skinned woman” (presumably the now deceased young woman) visited him. She told the monk where her body could be found and eventually advised him on how the empire could win the war and reunify the country for peace.
Variations of this story have been passed down through the generations, giving the mountain its special status. To this day, reports of a young lady with a dark complexion walking the trails of Ba Den Mountain persist. It’s believed that she still protects the mountain and its surrounding inhabitants.
Sun World Group Company Limited (Sun World Ba Den), has managed and maintained the impressive natural landmark for several years. It operates as a quasi-theme park equipped with two active cable car lines, a beautiful mountaintop vista with a restaurant, theater, lush gardens and a variety Buddhist iconography, as well as a lower peak with a traditional Buddhist temple complex.
What Can You Do At Black Virgin Mountain?
Despite being a “quasi-theme park,” you won’t find any rides or games at Black Virgin Mountain, like those at Sun World Ba Na Hills. Unlike its counterpart near Da Nang, Sun World Ba Den, aka “Black Virgin Mountain,” has a more natural, spiritual ambiance.
So what can you do there?
Savor The View From The Peak
Situated just under one kilometer above sea level, the summit of Black Virgin Mountain (Van Son Peak) provides dramatic, panoramic views of the surrounding area.
As far as the eye can see, there are verdant rice fields, flowing rivers, and even some specs of jungle. We spent most of our time at Black Virgin Mountain in awe of the beauty Vietnam is so famous for.
Park yourself near the perimeter fence, grab refreshments at the restaurant, and just take it in. The peak of Ba Den Mountain is also a great place to take photographs. You’ll likely see dozens of locals and foreigners posing for portraits throughout the summit area.
Enjoy Scenic Cable Car Rides
The fantastic views on the peak of Black Virgin Mountain are closely rivaled by those on the cable car ride up.
The Van Son route takes you from the mountain’s base to the summit covering 886 meters (2,907 feet) in less than 10 minutes. The shorter Chua Hang route carries you 259 meters (859 feet) to the lower peak in approximately 5 minutes. Both routes use modern, spacious cable cars, which can seat up to ten occupants.
We took both cable car routes on our trip to Black Virgin Mountain, and while the Van Son route has better views, the Chua Hang route takes you to the famed Ba Den Pagoda (Buddhist temple) and is well worth doing. Kick back, relax and enjoy an exhilarating ride.
Watch A Short Film & Light Show
Atop Black Virgin Mountain you’ll notice all sorts of elaborate structures including a Siddhartha Guatama statue, a sitting Buddha statue, and a fulldome theater.
Located atop the set of stairs leading up to the Siddhartha Guatama statue is the fulldome theater. Every 15 minutes or so, they have a short film and light show which dives into deeper details about the legends of Ba Den Mountain and the values of the Buddhist faith overall.
We took in the short show along with a few other visitors. It was an interesting way to spend a few minutes and provided us some respite from the heat. When entering the theater, the park employees provide you with “booties” (shoe coverings) to place over your feet. There is limited seating along the back wall of the theater, and while there was plenty of space the day we were there, it may fill up during busy times.
Take A Challenging Hike To The Summit
It’s possible to hike to the top of Black Virgin Mountain. However, it’s known to be a relatively difficult and time-consuming hike, but could be worth it if you’re up for a challenge.
Though we didn’t do the hike ourselves, most reports indicate it takes about 4-6 hours to scale the mountain and return to the bottom. The lower section of the trail is equipped with steps. However, they give way to steep, flat rocks after you pass the Ba Den Pagoda. Many intrepid trekkers report that the upper trail can become slippery when wet.
We recommend heading out early if you’re considering hiking Black Virgin Mountain. It may even be best to spend the night in the area. That way you can start early and witness the sunrise, which is supposed to be splendid here. However, you decide to hike, check the weather reports, wear proper shoes and clothing, and carry enough water for a full day.
Experience A Functioning Buddhist Pagoda
You’ll find a functioning Buddhist pagoda at the end of the Chua Hang cable car route. The Ba Pagoda system, or Linh Son Tien Thach Tu, consists of several structures, including the oldest temple in Tay Ninh.
The revered complex is visited by millions of worshippers each year, and has become an enduring symbol of the region’s history. One of Vietnam’s most unique spiritual sites, the Ba Pagoda system blends traditional Buddhist iconography with local folk-based beliefs. Shrines, caves, and temples integrate seamlessly among the breathtaking landscape.
Every year in early January, the Spring Festival takes place here. Special celebrations, including art exhibitions, fireworks, traditional dances, and games, attract thousands of visitors. Spiritually inclined individuals come to pray for health and prosperity in the new year. This festival is an excellent opportunity for visitors to get a crash course on local culture.
How Much Does It Cost To Visit Black Virgin Mountain?
We paid 600,000 VND per person, or a total of 1,200,000 VND (23.52 USD per person/47.04 USD total). That gave us access to all the Sun World Ba Den facilities and a roundtrip cable car ride to the summit (Van Son Peak) and Ba Pagoda system (Hang Pagoda). Food, beverages, and souvenirs are sold separately.
Though it’s not the cheapest outing you’ll find in Vietnam, we felt the experience was worth the price of admission. However, if you want to save a few bucks or spend a little more for a more luxurious experience, you have a few options.
For example, if you hike Black Virgin Mountain, you’ll only have to pay 10,000 VND (0.39 USD) per person to enter the park. But remember, the hike is arduous and takes a full day. On the other hand, if you would like to do Black Virgin Mountain in style, you can pay 700,000 (27.45 USD) per person to access both cable car lines and get a buffet lunch.

How To Get To Black Virgin Mountain
We drove our motorbike from Ho Chi Minh City to Black Virgin Mountain. The drive (from District 9) took us about 3 hours, moving at a leisurely pace. However, it can be done in about 2 hours from parts of the city. The first half of the drive is essentially just escaping the urban sprawl of Saigon, but the second half is quite scenic, as you pass through the countryside and small towns.
If you want to ride a motorbike or drive a car, you’ll take QL22 northwest out of Saigon. Once you pass through the town of Trảng Bàng, the road forks. You’ll want to stay right to get on DT782. After about 62 kilometers (38.5 miles), you’ll turn right onto a road called Bời Lời (clearly marked with signs for Black Virgin Mountain). The mountain stands tall above the surrounding landscape. You can’t miss it!
This is the most direct route from Ho Chi Minh. However, there are other variations available. If you punch in Black Virgin Mountain on your maps application you’ll see precisely how to get there. We took a few minor detours off of the primary route. There are large rubber plantations between Saigon and Black Virgin Mountain, which are pretty fun to drive through.
If you’re not keen on driving, you can:
- Take the bus – Go to An Suong Bus Station (in Saigon) and book a bus ticket to Tay Ninh. When you arrive in Tay Ninh, you can catch a local bus directly to Black Virgin Mountain. Another option would be to call a Grab from the Tay Ninh Bus Station, which could save you some time. A Grab bike should cost you about 70,000 VND (2.75 USD). A Grab car would cost about 175,000 VND (6.86 USD).
- Hire a private driver – Private car services can take you from Saigon to Black Virgin Mountain. In the past, we’ve used a small private car service run by a local woman named Binh Yen. She offers a good service (nice car & friendly driver) at a reasonable price. You can reach her via WhatsApp at +84 908 800 919.
- Go with a tour group – Numerous group tours are available to take you from Ho Chi Minh City to Black Virgin Mountain. Some tour operators will insist on taking you to Cu Chi Tunnels and Black Virgin Mountain in one day. However, we would advise against this, as these tours will likely feel rushed. Driving a motorbike from Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City was the best option for us. However, if you’d prefer not to do that – taking the bus will be the most cost-effective (but more time-consuming) way to go. Hiring a private driver will be the most expensive option, but more comfortable and convenient than taking the bus. Going with a tour group should be cheaper than a private driver (but more costly than taking the bus), while being relatively convenient and comfortable. When Should You Visit Black Virgin Mountain?
We visited Black Virgin Mountain in the second week of January. The sky was clear, the temperatures were pleasant, and the overall conditions couldn’t have been any better. That’s typical for January since the dry season in southern Vietnam lasts from December until April.
Sadly, we missed the annual Spring Festival at Ba Den Pagoda by only a few days (we were busy that week). However, visiting during the famed celebration could be a good idea if you want to see the mountain’s pagoda system in all its glory. The Spring Festival occurs annually in early January.
Ideally, you’ll want to visit Black Virgin Mountain between December and April. But, if you would like to see the mountain during other times of the year, we say go for it. Just be prepared for potential rainy conditions. Though, it doesn’t rain all day every day during the rainy season (May-November), there are often intense, but short-lived showers in the afternoon and evening. Is Black Virgin Mountain Worth Visiting?
In short, we say yes! Black Virgin Mountain is a distinctive geological feature with a storied history in Vietnam. Not only does the mountain maintain a mythological status in local culture, but it was also an active battle zone during the American War (Vietnam War). If you do the hike, you may stumble across relics (bunkers) from those troubling times. For history buffs, that alone is worth the trip.
We loved the cable car ride up, as it allowed us to relax and take in the surrounding area’s natural beauty. The summit of Black Virgin Mountain is also something to behold. Of course, the view is excellent, but on top of that, the facilities are first-rate. The maze of escalators, staircases, gardens, fountains, statues, and view points reminds one of a high-priced theme park in the western world. It’s clear that a lot of money was spent constructing it all.
So, if you’re in HCMC and looking for something to do outside the city, we say take the trip to Black Virgin Mountain. If you’re traveling by motorbike, bus, private car, or using a tour, it’s a great day trip. If you want to hike up to the summit, we’d recommend spending the night before in Tay Ninh. That way you can get to the trail early and enjoy your time rather than rushing up and down the trail. And not to beat a dead horse, but – the hike is rated relatively difficult, so keep that in mind.

- Bring Extra cash for food and drinks
- Carry plenty of water (though they do sell it there)
- Use sun protection (clothing/sunglasses/sun cream)
- Bring rain gear (umbrella/poncho)
- Take lots of photos (it’s so picturesque)
- See the light show (in the theater atop the summit)
- Go to both the summit and the pagoda (the vibes are so different)
